First off home birth was never in my future but circumstances of life placed my midwife Amanda Latham into our families heart for a lifetime. For weeks I had been experiencing false prodromal labor, which is extremely common after having your first baby. It’s where you have practice contractions for a short period of time. In my case it was 3 in total over two weeks lasting 2-3 hours long.
The day started at 1:12 in the morning where my contractions were averaging 6 minutes apart. At 2am I made the decision to let my midwife know that I was having contractions. She called me at 3am and was on the phone for about 15 minutes. We both agreed I needed sleep in case this was actual labor. I did try and sleep and managed to for about another hour. Amanda is a rockstar with me tracking and texting her each hour with updates. Only until 5am was where I managed to catch a small nap. Around 7:30am she made the decision to start getting ready and head on over. Amanda was here by 8:47am and shortly after her assistant Christina. Prior to all this I had already gone upstairs and showered just in case. When she got to the house I was already 5cm and 100% effaced and ready to go. This is pretty much where everything went quickly. My labor progressed and I was planning to have a water birth. The best part about a home birth is everything is subject to change. In my case we had a plumbing issue and I had to change my plan up. By the time of transition I was getting a little sick and finally got sick causing my water to break. Let me say most funniest moment where my midwife was in the splash zone and it felt like a balloon popping.
From there it was not much longer when I started to say I couldn’t do it and that is when I realized her head was out. Due to laying on my back her shoulder was stuck i was told I needed to get up a flip over to my hands and knees right then and there. I didn’t skip a beat and as soon as I got up my midwife was quickly able to rotate her and baby girl was born at 11:27am weighing a total of 7lbs 14oz.
Home birth has been the most beautiful thing I had ever experienced. I had watched many videos and read many different stories, but in all honesty until you have one those stories don’t amount to how emotional and beautiful it truly is. It is so much more intimate and calming. It’s also something that requires a ton of mental preparation. For a few short months My midwife prepared me mentally and I was able to apply most of which in those moments. I listened to my body and ultimately I DID IT! My body and mind are so empowered by what I accomplished in a moment of where I easily could have given up. 💗I can’t thank Amanda enough for helping me bring my sweet baby girl into the world💗. My family, Christina Jordan and Justin were all amazing support throughout the entire process. Without out my amazing support system I’m not sure how I would have been able to get through it all. After this experience I’m so proud to say I had a homebirth.
